KUALA LUMPUR – The Malaysian Consultative Council of Islamic Organisations (MAPIM) has condemned the reported United States attack in Sirik, southern Iran, which allegedly struck a residential home during a wedding celebration.
MAPIM president Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid said the reported attack was unacceptable as it allegedly killed at least four people, including a child, and injured more than 50 others, according to the Iranian Red Crescent.
He described the reported attack on the civilian gathering as barbaric, morally indefensible and deeply disturbing.
“A wedding is a celebration of life, family and human dignity. A home filled with families and guests must never become a battlefield,” he said in a statement today.
Mohd Azmi said the reported deaths and injuries should raise serious concerns within the international community, particularly over the protection of civilians during armed conflict.
He said civilians remained protected under international humanitarian law, adding that military objectives could not justify disregard for innocent lives.
“The reported strike in Sirik raises grave questions concerning the principles of distinction, proportionality and precaution in the conduct of hostilities,” he said.
Mohd Azmi also said the United States, as a major global power and permanent member of the United Nations Security Council, had a serious responsibility to uphold international law.
“The powerful cannot demand rules for others while treating civilian lives as expendable,” he said.
Meanwhile, MAPIM called for an immediate and independent investigation into the reported attack and the circumstances surrounding the civilian casualties.
It also urged full accountability if the investigation establishes any violations of international humanitarian law.
The organisation further called for an immediate cessation of attacks that could endanger civilian populations in Iran and across the region.
MAPIM also urged the protection of homes, medical facilities, schools, religious institutions and other civilian infrastructure.
In addition, it called for urgent international diplomatic intervention to prevent the widening conflict from triggering a greater humanitarian catastrophe.
MAPIM said the United Nations Security Council and relevant international mechanisms must act decisively instead of allowing further civilian deaths to occur without consequences.
Mohd Azmi said the international community must not become numb to civilian deaths in conflicts around the world.
“Every number represents a human being. A child has a name. A mother has a family. A father has a home,” he said.
He said the tragedy in Sirik also highlighted the need for Muslim countries to strengthen collective diplomatic and humanitarian mechanisms to protect vulnerable populations facing aggression and armed conflict.
“The Muslim world needs greater unity, strategic coordination and institutional capacity to defend human dignity and respond effectively to the suffering of the Ummah,” he said.
MAPIM extended its condolences to the families of those killed and prayed for the recovery of those injured.
