PUTRAJAYA – The Majlis Perundingan Pertubuhan Islam Malaysia (MAPIM) today submitted a memorandum to the United Nations Representative in Putrajaya in conjunction with Kashmir Solidarity Day, reaffirming its support for the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK) and calling for stronger international action to uphold justice, human rights and the right to self-determination.
The memorandum was submitted on 5 August, the anniversary of India’s unilateral revocation of the special constitutional status of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019, a move MAPIM said significantly altered the political and legal landscape of the disputed territory.
According to MAPIM, numerous reports by international human rights organisations have since raised concerns over restrictions on civil liberties, prolonged detentions, demographic changes, media censorship and extensive security measures imposed on the Kashmiri people.
Through the memorandum, MAPIM urged the United Nations to play a more proactive and effective role in ensuring that the rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir are protected in accordance with the Charter of the United Nations, the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, international humanitarian law and the relevant United Nations Security Council resolutions on Kashmir.
Among its key demands, MAPIM called on the UN to intensify diplomatic efforts to implement the relevant Security Council resolutions on Jammu and Kashmir, facilitate an independent, impartial and transparent international investigation into alleged human rights violations, and ensure the protection of the fundamental rights, dignity and security of the Kashmiri people.
The organisation also urged the UN to advocate for the release of political detainees and all individuals arbitrarily detained without due process, uphold the right of the people of Jammu and Kashmir to self-determination through a peaceful, democratic and internationally supervised process in line with UN resolutions, and expand humanitarian assistance for affected communities, particularly women, children and other vulnerable groups.
In addition, MAPIM called on the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the international community, governments, parliamentarians, civil society organisations and human rights institutions to strengthen global solidarity with the people of Kashmir and support peaceful efforts towards achieving a just and lasting resolution of the dispute in accordance with international law.
MAPIM President Mohd Azmi Abdul Hamid said the organisation remains committed to raising the Kashmir issue at regional and international platforms while working with global partners to promote justice, peace, human dignity and respect for fundamental human rights.
“Solidarity with Kashmir is a commitment to justice, human dignity and international law. Lasting peace can only be achieved when the legitimate rights and aspirations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir are respected and fulfilled,” he said. – DETIK MALAYSIA
